Art344 Digiscape - Artist Statement

In order to complete this assignment, I first had to understand what a “digiscape” meant to me. This took me through a mental journey through the possible definitions of “landscape” and then was to apply it in a digital format. Here is a slight description of my journey:

...Extensive = 2. Of or relating to the cultivation of vast areas of land with a minimum of labor or expense.

...Prospect = 6. The act of surveying or examining. à

Digiscape = an extensive and digitalized mental view; an interior survey or examine...

This journey broaden my mind to sort through my thoughts to find a way to express my extensive mental view of the world.

As an environmentally conscious individual, I knew that it was only appropriate for my third project to reflect the environment in some way and when I found a neighbor’s planted bathtub, I knew what I wanted to do.

The image is meant to show the scene after the earth decided to start over – wipe the slate clean. Though I like my final print for this class, I have better ideas for the assignment but feel quite limited by my Photoshop (amoung other) skills.

In the future, I plan on maybe converting the image from its photograph-based appearance and into a more drawn/painted appearance and maybe that will help to smooth out my Photoshop attempts.

I chose both of the follow paintings because the fact the horizon is so far off. I like how de Chirico's painting holds a dramatic vanishing point and how Tanguy's horizon just fades into the sky.

alright, so a few updates.

1) i went totally hand for the flyer i was working on. kinda last minute, but the row liked it so it's all gravy. here it is and everyone should stop by on this saturday, 12-9pm (on academy st. between main/delaware), $5, 7 bands, lots of fun.

2) As for the next project, i've been thinkin a lot about it (the opposite of what jennifer to said to do). Here's some of the thoughts I'm working on:

alright, i'm really kinda stumped. i've been working with a bunch of different ideas/images and i can't seem to be able to find one that i really want. i'm working to create a possible flyer for skidfest for this spring but just keep getting distracted. plus, i'm not an art major, so i'm just teaching myself how to use photoshop/illustrator as i go along (plus, it doesn't help that i have a crappy old dell and have Paint as my best option for graphics alteration...).

so, i've added a few sketches that i've been working on (and i have a few others but for some reason blogger.com won't let me upload them...just wanted to put something up in the meantime). plus, i have a shit load of poster/flyer images that i researched for inspiration and i'll throw a few of them down once i have the artists to give credit to...

Again, this is my playing around with photoshop to finalize my idea of how I would like my project to look like once it's completed.

I will admit, my project will be small and I wish that I had made it larger. But, again, it's my first time doing anything like this so I guess you have to start somewhere...

For my project, I wanted to have something that has to do with the environment. One of my ideas was to have a waterfront city's reflection as a forest - a bit of a reflection into the past...? I looked for simple images of waterfront cities and forest tree lines and here is the path I followed in created my final project:

Pre-Illustrated: This was before I started working on Illustrator (it's not very available to me...).

Dropped the filters after one of the group review.

Added a water transparency.

Simplified image with filters again to get a better idea of Illustrator image.

After speaking with Jennifer, she suggested to screen print the city and then add that to the actual image of the reflected trees. I increased the contrast for when placed in Illustrator.

Artist's Statement

To me, manipulation is taking an existing raw material (ex. a photo, an object, an idea, a landscape, etc.) and altering it in such a way to either enhance the existing material or convey a completely new idea. For instance, if an artist wanted to create an image of a person who is sad, sure, they could follow people around all day with a camera and wait until someone frowns with the perfect lighting and background, or... they could take away a child's ice cream cone, or ask someone to look sad. And once the sad person image has been acquired, the artist can continue on to alter the image by changing the lighting or background to make the image more dramatic, etc. The options are limitless and all of those choices made are manipulations to the natural state of the raw material.

"innocent"-until-proven-guilty?

the image on the front of the 1994 newsweek is the actual mugshot of oj simpson. next to it, the front cover of the 1994 time magazine, is the same mugshot and clearly altered to make oj look "darker" and thereby more menacing. i chose this comparison of the front covers because i thought it was interesting how easily that a few alterations to a photo can turn a innocent-until-proven-guilty man into a criminal (though he still doesn't look very innocent in the original mugshot anyway...).

isolated color

this image is an example of many images that display isolated colors surrounded by an either sepia or b/w background. what draws me to these types of images is because of the effect of the colors. for me, that effect is channeling the focus of the image to a specific point and creating the whole image more profound or more likely to stimulate an emotional response.

political humor

this image is from a 2007 NYC exhibit titled 'Line Up" where artists nora ligorano & marshall reese depicted the Bush administration as criminals in a response to the war in Iraq. i chose this image because, for me, it is effectively humorous and clearly stating the artists political position of their subject simultaneously.
